New York City
Find the best activities, passes, tickets, tours, excursions or museums in New York City.
New York City is made up of five boroughs, and yes, that means that Manhattan isn’t the only place where you can experience real New York City culture. Each of the five boroughs has something unique to offer, and if you’re a smart traveler, then you’ll be sure to take advantage of each of the five boroughs. Don’t let anyone tell you that Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island aren’t as fun as Manhattan. And don’t let anyone tell you that Manhattan is just a tourist trap. There are hidden treasures all around the Big Apple, and with the right travel tips, you can explore them all. Queens, known as “the world’s borough,” is the most diverse borough in the city, with over 800 different languages spoken. That’s more than anywhere else in the world! Just hop on any subway line in Queens, and you’ll be transported to a new country. For those who crave Greek food, the neighborhood of Astoria is home to many authentic Greek cafes and tavernas, but there are also other options in Astoria, such as Thai food and even Australian food. In the mood for south Asian cuisine? Take the F train to Jamaica for some Indian, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan eats. The neighborhood of Flushing has some great authentic Chinese restaurants, as well as Korean BBQ. Wherever you go in Queens, you’re bound to learn (and eat) something new.

Queens is the perfect borough to visit for sports fans. Catch the New York Mets play baseball at CitiField, or watch the U.S. Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. One of the most iconic places in Queens is Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, where the BJK Tennis Center is located. Take a photo in front of the iconic World’s Fair globe, visit the Queens Zoo, the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Museum, the Queens Botanical Garden, or the World Ice Arena for some ice skating. The Bronx is Queens’ rival in many ways. It’s home to Yankee Stadium, where the New York Yankees play, as well as the New York Botanical Garden, and the massive Bronx Zoo. Most tourists come to the Bronx to peek at the animals in the zoo, but the Bronx has a culture of its own that is begging to be discovered. Hip-hop was born in the Bronx, and you can even take tours that will bring you to some of the locations in the borough that influenced the development of hip-hop. Most people are probably most familiar with Manhattan’s Little Italy, but that area has become a tourist trap that profits from Italian stereotypes. For a real taste of Italy, visit Arthur Avenue, which is lined with Italian restaurants, cafes, and places to buy Italian goods like fresh mozzarella. Most people don’t associate the Bronx with a resort, but the borough does have its own little seaside town. City Island is every busy New Yorker’s summertime escape from packed subway cars and hectic work schedules. Take some time to relax, do a little fishing, scuba dive, and eat excellent seafood while on City Island. Ever heard of Staten Island? You probably haven’t. You’ll probably hear residents of the other four boroughs say that Staten Island isn’t really part of New York City. But smart travelers should know that there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the “forgotten borough.” Enjoy the ferry ride from Manhattan to Staten Island and then take a trip to a museum. Staten Island boasts some interesting museums that you can’t find in Manhattan, including the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan art, the National Lighthouse Museum, and the Staten Island Museum. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center is affiliated with the Smithsonian Museum and is filled with Greek Revival architecture, art galleries, and charming gardens. Take a break from the hectic other four boroughs and visit Staten Island’s Seaside Wildlife Nature Park, where you can walk or bike through nature trails. Believe it or not, Staten Island played a role in the Revolutionary War, and you can visit the Conference House, where in 1776, American greats Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge met with a British commander and refused to end the war. You can also see some history at the Alice Austen House, where photographer Alice Austen lived. See some of her photos from the 19th and 20th centuries and learn about this woman who broke down gender barriers. Brooklyn is quickly becoming New York’s most popular borough and is the place to be for trendy restaurants and bars. Hipsters have brought with them craft beer and brunch spots. Despite its gentrification, there are still some spots where you can escape the hipster influence. Brighton Beach, home to a large Russian community, is a piece of old Brooklyn that has yet to feel the effects of gentrification. Brooklyn is a diverse place, where you can find various African cultures and traditions, Colombian food, real New York pizza, and plenty of other good eats from around the globe. Brooklyn travel tips on Tiplr will guide you to the best sights to see and places to be. The island of Manhattan is the New York City’s busiest borough, but if you’re trying to avoid the usual tourist sites, here are some travel suggestions for visiting Manhattan. Go back in time to New York’s days as a British colony and have a drink at Fraunces Tavern, where George Washington used to hang out. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters, located up in Washington Heights, features awesome Medieval art and architecture, while also providing visitors with a place to be at peace amidst the bustling city. In recent years, lower Manhattan has become one of the trendiest spots in the city. Walk SoHo’s cobblestone streets and go shopping at one of the many high-end or affordable stores. Greenwich Village and the East and West Villages have always been and still are hubs for young artists and rebels. Try not to stick around Times Square and the typical tourist spots in Manhattan for too long. Hop on NYC’s somewhat-functioning subway system and explore the rest of the city. Better yet, try staying at a hotel or an Airbnb in another borough. You’ll find that all five boroughs have plenty to offer.
