The Weather in New York City, month by month.

How to navigate NYC Weather During Your Next Trip to the Big Apple

For travelers, the weather is the most important part about a trip. However, it’s hard to know what to wear and bring when you haven’t been to the city you’re visiting. The weather in New York City is unique and constantly fluctuating. However, to make things easier for your next trip to New York here is a month by month weather analysis and some tips on what to bring!

January is the coldest month in New York with temperatures reaching below freezing. This also makes it the snowiest month of the year. It’s harder to get around with snow on the ground, traffic tends to back up too. If you’re planning a trip during this month I highly suggest packing a great pair of snow boots, scarves and a sturdy winter coat to keep warm. The upside to this month\\’s heinous weather are the shopping sales and the beautiful winter sights. Hot chocolate by windows never seems as sweet.

February’s frigidness is on par with January’s but does offer solace on some days. You’ll find more sunny days in this month but they’ll typically be accompanied by a chilly breeze. According to Weather US, temperatures in New York range from 5°F to 28°F (-15°C to -2°C) and 42°F (5.5°C). So, my recommendation is to bring clothes that you can layer and a puffer jacket. Puffer jackets offer a great deal of warmth because of the insulation and synthetic fibers. Since the temperatures fluctuate often in February layers provide the opportunity to warm or cool down based on your needs. That way New York weather can’t get you down.

March marks the start of the spring season in New York, however it is still cold and happens to be very rainy during this month. Typically we’ll see about 4 to 5 inches of rainfall with temperatures reaching around 37°F to  50°F (2.7°C to 10°C) for our highs and 14°F to 26°F (-10°C  -3.3°C) for the lows. March offers forgiving days, typically mild with colder nights. I suggest packing an umbrella and raincoat in addition to your layers.

In April, you’ll still find rain but you can ditch your winter clothes for this month! Sunny weather and blooming flowers, you’ll love to come and visit during this time. That being said, you will find the city packed with tourists during this time of year. Temperatures range from 29°F to 61°F (-1.6°C to 16.11°C) , so don’t be afraid to pack some shorts or a few cardigans! Visits to Central Park at this time of year are absolutely lovely.

May is another fine time to come up (or down) to New York City since the weather is so beautiful during this time of the year. So, come out and celebrate Mother’s Day or Memorial Day while New York is only plagued with light showers and has temperatures from 45°F to 70°F (7.22°C to 21.11°C). This is a great month to hit the beach or visit the World’s Faire which features great food by New York’s finest chefs and street cooks.Take advantage of the weather and truly enjoy the sights and culture New York has to offer.

June is the beginning of summer in New York City and temperatures rise to 75°F to 80°F (23.89°C to 26.67°C) in the highs and the lows hit at about 47°F to 64°F (8.33°C to 17.77°C). Nights during the summer are warmer and are typically muggy and humid. June is the best time to hop on the ferry or train and escape to the beach. Summers in New York City usually see periodic thunderstorms and some serious rainfall. So, pack raincoats and umbrellas with your summer clothes (and don’t forget your sunscreen).

July is only my favorite month because it’s where my birthday falls. In New York City, July is brutally hot. Average temperatures vary from 75°F to 85°F (23.89°C to 26.67°C) but more often than not you’ll have days with temperatures at 95°F (35°C). The smells of the city come alive in the sweltering heat. July isn’t the best month to visit New York in your trip is mainly city based or in the outdoors. The subways are typically very cold because the AC is very high. I highly suggest packing a jacket for the subways to avoid catching a cold and a refillable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated and cool outside. Don’t underestimate the sun\\’s rays during this time of year and bring sunscreen as well. New York in July tends to experience a number of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. So, pack your umbrella, raincoat and maybe even a good book in case the weather makes your plans fall through.

August is the beginning of a weather transition in New York. During this month, it’s still hot, temperatures range from 75°F to 80°F (23.89°C to 26.67°C). While the heat is sticky, the clouds offer solace from the sun\\’s harsh rays. There are many beautiful sunny days but they are paired with high humidity, ranging from 67% to 70%.  Despite this, there are many things to do in New York in August, including the Afropunk festival in Commodore Park, Monday film festivals in Bryant Park or visiting Governors Island which is only open for a limited amount of time.

September in New York offers hot days with cool autumn breezes with gorgeous autumn colors. During the first week, the heat mirrors that of August. Temperatures fall on the cooler side at around 68°F to 75°F (20°C to 23.89°C). These days are great for hikes, walking around the park or visiting the New York renaissance faire. The days and nights are pleasant and enjoyable which offers a lot of flexibility with what you can do with your days. Fun little tip for photographers, the lighting in New York is best in September. If you’re looking for beautiful photos with amazing sunsets, look no further.

October is, by far, the best month to visit New York.  The spirit of autumn really comes alive; the weather during this month is absolutely phenomenal; with temps reaching 55°F to 65°F (12.77°C to 18.33°C).  While nights can get a little chilly it’s easily fixed with a light jacket or layers. If you\\’re visiting upstate New York you\\’ll find spectacular natural views that you’ll only graze the surface of with the city sights. If you\\’re planning a trip to New York, this is the best time. In addition to the beautiful weather and landscape, you’ll even find the city getting ready for the holidays with great sales and lovely decorations.

November is the last month of autumn and jump starts the chilly season. Days typically range from 45°F (7.2°C) to 55°F ( 12.8°C) and nights drop to 27°F to (-2.8°C) to 40°F (4.4°C). Occasionally, you’ll find snowfall in New York during November or some rainfall so have your puffer jacket or a pea coat handy. There’s rarely sunny days during this month so the weather mimics winter though not as harsh.

December is a desirable month to visit New York because of the New Year’s Ball Drop and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. If you\\’re deciding to come for these months then you must come prepared. Temperatures drop to 15°F to 25°F (-9°C to 3.88°C)  and the highs go to 35° F to 45°F (1.66°C to 7.22°C). Make sure you have your scarves, gloves, hats and coats ready to tackle the New York winter. Sunshine is less available so there is seldom a moment of warm reprieve. However, with the city in high spirits for the holidays, it’s easy to forget about the cold. Fun activities during your New York visit could include ice skating or snowball fights in Central Park.
