North America
North America is the third largest continent covering just over 16% of the earth’s total land area. According to the United Nations geoscheme, North America includes three big countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada. It also encompasses the dependent territories of Greenland (Denmark), Bermuda (U.K.) and Saint Pierre and Miquelon (France). There is a plethora of great travel tips and destinations all over North America. In recent years the population of North America has surpassed 450 million people. This massive population is spread throughout numerous diverse landscapes, from jam-packed cities like New York, to the desolate tundra of Greenland, with the beaches of California and Mexico, flat cornfields of the Midwest and the stunning Rocky Mountains in between. The region is home to some of the most stunning national parks and impressive natural monuments in the world, and has a relatively young history compared to other civilizations.

Canada, which takes up the largest portion of North America (just barely edging out the U.S) is divided into ten provinces and three territories. These include Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Despite its huge landmass, nearly 82 percent of the population resides in large cities, like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, which are located along the southern border. Smart travelers frequent these modern and cosmopolitan cities, as well as Canada’s extensive stretches of breathtaking, pristine wilderness. Canada, like the United States, has two distinct coasts: the majestic Atlantic and the carefree Pacific, and each gives explorers a unique experience.

The United States, Canada’s neighbor to the south, is a federal republic comprised of 50 states, as well as additional territories. Its history makes it a truly unique melting pot of innumerable cultures and backgrounds. Its population of 323 million people is as diverse as its landscape. Some of the best travel destinations are in the USA. It is a country that pairs iconic cities like the Big Apple and Los Angeles with Mother Nature’s greatest masterpieces, containing everything from waterfalls to rainforests, volcanoes, reefs, and deserts. Driving cross-country on a classic American road trip, one can pass through the snowy Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon of Arizona, California’s vineyards, the swamplands of the South, and quaint, coastal towns.

American culture has touched everything in such distinct ways. In music, there’s the country in Nashville, the birth of rap and hip hop, Jazz’ New Orleans’ beginnings, and rock n roll roots. Many foods over the years, like hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, apple pie, macaroni and cheese, and meatloaf have come to be known as genuine American foods. Thanks to diverse communities, in urban areas you can find every type of cuisine imaginable, from Indian to French to Mexican. Across the country, you can find authentic eats in five-star restaurants, roadside diners, hole in the wall dives, and mom and pop coffee shops.

Despite a distinct American culture, every state in the union is entirely unique and Tiplr has the best travel tips for experiencing each like a smart traveler.  Laid-back California hugs the Pacific Ocean and gave birth to a hippie-surfer lifestyle that still exists along the coast in places like San Diego, Venice, and Malibu. It is also home to Los Angeles, iconic Hollywood, and the socially liberal fog-shrouded, hill-top haven that is San Francisco. There is no shortage of vineyards, beaches and dazzling forests in California, making it an ideal destination those who love sun and fun. Heading east, the lights of Las Vegas beckon from the desert of Nevada. Traveling in almost any direction, you’ll run into the Great Plains, where deer and buffalo roam. Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world, covers parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Superior and four other lakes make up the Great Lakes which stretch all the way east to New York and border important Midwest cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Cleveland. In the South, even two neighboring states, like Florida and South Carolina, have much different selling points. Vacationers love South Beach’s nightclubs, but some of the best travel tips will lead you off the beaten path to 1920’s art-deco buildings or to Charleston’s charming cobblestone streets, Civil War-era plantations, and horse-drawn carriages. Up in New England, there are so many travel recommendations for each of the four distinct seasons. Spring means maple sugar production in New Hampshire and students coming out of hibernation in BostonMaine in the summer brings lobster and sailing.  In fall there’s foliage and apple picking in Connecticut, and winter is a favorite time for skiers in Vermont.

When you think of Mexico, your mind may right to beachfront resorts in Cancun, but there’s so much more to the country. Mexico City, which has nearly nine million people, is blessed with all sorts of cultural sights and architectural feats. Why not take in these views with tableside guacamole and a cocktail? In Todos Santos, step back in time through this quirky art museum. You’ll find authentic ethnic art in handmade paper, paintings, antique jewelry, crosses, figurines, and maps. There’s also an amazing collection of old masks which make up the focal point of the gallery.

Greenland, the world’s largest non-continental island and as a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the largest dependent territory. Nearly all of it is covered in ice. It is also the third-largest country in North America despite its population of only 56,000 people. Most of the population, who are largely Greenlandic Inuit, live along the iceless southwest coast, which has a milder climate. The northeastern part of Greenland is the site of the world’s largest national park, Northeast Greenland National Park. Its position above the Arctic Circle results in natural phenomena like the midnight sun and the infamous Northern Lights. Travelers go there to see these rarities. Greenland travel tips include dog sledding, sailing amongst icebergs, exploring fjords and hiking the mountainous terrain.

Bermuda is a string of self-governing British islands. It is located north of the Caribbean, off the coast of the Carolinas. Bermuda is well known for its clear, turquoise waters and stunning pink sand beaches. Popular amongst divers and snorkelers, it is considered the shipwreck capital of the world, so there’s no shortage of reef and wreckage to explore. St. George’s, on the northernmost point of the island, is filled with historic buildings dating back to the 1600s. Travelers frequent the Royal Naval Dockyard, their two impressive lighthouses, and Crystal and Fantasy Caves. There are no car rentals in Bermuda, but the island is only 21 square miles, so it’s easy to get around via scooter, public transportation or taxi. Bermuda’s English heritage can still be seen in its architecture, art galleries and museums, history buffs have a World Heritage Site to discover and its varied terrain makes it popular for golfers, hikers, and beach lovers. Tiplr has more travel info on celebrating Good Friday in Bermuda. Saint Pierre and Miquelon is France’s last territory in North America and is situated right below Canada’s island of Newfoundland, so it is definitely a bit off the beaten path. It is more French than anything, with Renaults lining the tiny one-way streets, the smell of freshly baked baguettes wafting out of patisserie windows, and locals kissing one another hello. Between the two islands, the population only amounts to just over 7,000 people, but summer festivals bring in travelers from France and elsewhere. The Basque Festival features traditional strength demonstrations like stone-throwing and lumberjack skills. Miquelon’s seafood festival every August provides a huge buffet of home-made delicacies. Finally, Bastille Day is celebrated in a big way, tying them back to their European roots.
